The Dallas Stars have acquired the rights of goaltender Antti Niemi from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for a seventh-round pick (193rd overall) in 2015, the team confirmed on Saturday.
Niemi, 31, is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, but he is expected to negotiate a new deal with the Stars over the next few days.
“Antti is a proven goaltender, who has played and succeeded at the highest levels,” Stars GM Jim Nill said in a press released. “He’s one of the hardest working goalies out there and we look forward to working towards an agreement.”
The veteran Finn posted a 31-23-7 record with a .914 save percentage and 2.59 goals-against average in 61 games last season.
Niemi has appeared in 338 career games with the Sharks and Chicago Blackhawks, winning a Stanley Cup in 2009-10.
He represented Finland at the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi, winning a bronze medal.
