Shattenkirk to undergo abdominal surgery

It appeared to have been a pretty standard attempt to hit a breaking Alexander Ovechkin by Kevin Shattenkirk. Except the Shattenkirk didn't end up faring too well against the Capitals captain.

St. Louis Blues defenceman Kevin Shattenkirk will undergo abdominal surgery after suffering an injury during Sunday’s 4-3 win over against the Washington Capitals.

The all-star rearguard went into the boards awkwardly after getting tangled up with Alex Ovechkin during the first period. He left the game and did not return.

According to the Blues, the procedure is scheduled to happen within the next seven to 10 days. He will be listed as week-to-week during his recovery.

Shattenkirk, 26, has eight goals and 32 assists for 40 points in 48 games played this season.
