Stamkos leaves game with lower-body injury, status unclear

Watch as Tampa Bay Lightning captain Steven Stamkos leaves the game against the Detroit Red Wings with an apparent knee injury.

Tampa Bay Lightning captain Steven Stamkos left Tuesday’s 4-3 win over the Detroit Red Wings with an apparent lower-body injury, the team announced.

Midway through the first period, Stamkos appeared to twist his knee on a collision with Detroit’s Gustav Nyquist, before limping off the ice.

The 26-year-old has missed significant time due to injury in the past, missing nearly all of the 2016 post-season following blood clot surgery, and most of the 2013-14 regular season with a broken leg.

With a goal earlier in Tuesday’s game, Stamkos temporarily tied Mark Scheifele for the league lead with 20 points in 17 games.
