The Dallas Stars have made significant progress on a contract extension with forward Tyler Seguin, according to Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos.
Seguin is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season. He’s due to earn $5.75 million for the 2018-19 campaign, the last of a six-year pact he signed in 2012.
The 26-year-old is among the elite centres in the NHL. His 40 goals were tied for seventh in the league last season, and he added 38 assists for a total of 78 points. It was the fifth straight season Seguin cracked the 70-point mark.
Inking Seguin to a long-term deal would fortify the Stars’ core for the foreseeable future. All-star teammate Jamie Benn is also under control through the 2024-25 season with an average annual value of $9.5 million, while goaltender Ben Bishop is signed through 2022-23 with a $4.9-million cap hit.
Additionally, winger Alexander Radulov and defenceman John Klingberg are inked through 2021-22.
