Stars, Tyler Seguin have made significant progress on extension

Toronto Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas says there’s no updates with respect to the William Nylander contract status, but they continue to work away at it, and will preach patience throughout the process.

The Dallas Stars have made significant progress on a contract extension with forward Tyler Seguin, according to Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos.

Seguin is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season. He’s due to earn $5.75 million for the 2018-19 campaign, the last of a six-year pact he signed in 2012.

The 26-year-old is among the elite centres in the NHL. His 40 goals were tied for seventh in the league last season, and he added 38 assists for a total of 78 points. It was the fifth straight season Seguin cracked the 70-point mark.

Inking Seguin to a long-term deal would fortify the Stars’ core for the foreseeable future. All-star teammate Jamie Benn is also under control through the 2024-25 season with an average annual value of $9.5 million, while goaltender Ben Bishop is signed through 2022-23 with a $4.9-million cap hit.

Additionally, winger Alexander Radulov and defenceman John Klingberg are inked through 2021-22.
