Stephen Gionta assured his coach he wouldn’t lose his cool and spear an opponent like that again, but the league fined him for good measure.
The New Jersey Devils winger was fined a maximum $2,284.95 by the department of player safety Friday for spearing Ottawa Senators defenceman Mark Borowiecki during the second period of Thursday’s 5-4 Devils victory. (Watch the play above.)
Gionta was given a five-minute spearing major and ejected from the game. He said he apologized to Borowiecki for his actions.

“I just lost my cool, and that can’t happen,” Gionta told MSG Network after the game. “I obviously let my teammates down with it, and luckily they bailed me out.”
Devils coach John Hynes spoke with Gionta about his reckless decision Friday and told reporters he’s confident it won’t happen again.
Gionta’s money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.
