Panik suspended two games for hit on Alzner

Tampa Bay winger Richard Panik will have a hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety Wednesday for this hit on Caps d-man Karl Alzner Tuesday night at Verizon Center.

Tampa Bay Lightning forward Richard Panik has been suspended two games by the NHL for his hit on Washington Capitals defenceman Karl Alzner on Tuesday night.

At 16:31 of the second period, Alzner attempted to chip the puck from the neutral zone into the Lightning’s end but was driven into the boards by Panik. Alzner remained down briefly after the hit but did return in the third period and Washington won the game 6-5 in a shootout.

Panik was dealt a five-minute major for boarding on the play.

Alzner told reporters he did not undergo concussion testing after the collision.

“I’m completely fine. It was more scary than anything. But I have no effects, no after-effects,” Alzner said. “It was more just shock than anything. My head feels fine, everything’s fine. I’m pretty lucky.”
