Ryan Getzlaf, Andrew Ladd, and Jonathan Toews were announced by the NHL as the three finalists for the Mark Messier Leadership Award on Monday.

This marks the third-straight year that Toews, the Chicago Blackhawks captain, has been amongst the finalists, and the second straight year for Getzlaf.

The Mark Messier Leadership Award is given “to the player who exemplifies great leadership qualities to his team, on and off the ice during the regular season.”

Nominations are solicited from fans, clubs and NHL personnel, but the sole decider of the winner is made by the award’s namesake, Mark Messier.

This is the first time that Winnipeg Jets captain Ladd has been nominated, who has held the captaincy of the club since Nov. 2010 when the team was still in Atlanta.

Ladd’s nomination comes on the heels of the notorious exit of former teammate Evander Kane, and the Jets’ first playoff appearance since moving to Winnipeg.

The winner will be announced at the NHL Awards ceremony in Las Vegas on June 24.
