The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed defenceman Paul Ranger to a one-year deal.
The deal is expected to be worth around $1 million, according to his agent.
Ranger, 28, spent last season with the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League, registering eight goals, 25 points, 54 penalty minutes and a plus-16 rating.
The 2012-13 season was Ranger’s first in over two years after stepping away from the game in 2010.
The Oshawa, Ont., native played 270 NHL games with the Tampa Bay Lightning over the course of five seasons between 2005-06 and 2009-10.
His best season with the Lightning, which drafted him 183rd overall in the 2002 NHL Draft, came in 2007-08 when he registered 31 points in 72 regular season games.
In other news, the Leafs have promoted video analyst Chris Dennis to the position of assistant coach on Randy Carlyle’s staff.
