Goaltending match-up: Jaroslav Halak (26/29, .897 SV%) vs. Tim Thomas (34/35, .971 SV%)
Net notes: Halak had a 3-1-0 mark vs. BOS coming in with 1.51/ .954 peripherals. Thomas had two starts in January to date with five goals against, with a 5-12-2 lifetime mark vs. MON and 3.14/ .903 splits.

Boston line combos
Martin St. Pierre Marc Savard Chuck Kobasew
Blake Wheeler David Krejci Michael Ryder
P.J. Axelsson Stephane Yelle Martins Karsums
Key notes: The Kostitsyns have certainly increased their productivity of late. Andrei Kostitsyn (1G, even, 5 PIM, 14:14 ice time, 2:43 PP, 0:45 PK, 5 SOG) has points in five in a row now with 12 points in eight starts coming in here. Sergei Kostitsyn (1A, even, 2 PIM, 14:02 ice time, 2:32 PP, 1:21 PK, 2 SOG) has points in four of five and that included five points headed in here. Andrei Markov (1A, even, 23:31 ice time, 5:27 PP, 4:16 PK, no SOG) has PP helpers in four straight.
Zdeno Chara (2G, +1, 2 PIM, 31:48 ice time, 6:09 PP, 3:09 PK, 5 SOG) had gone five games without a goal but has points back-to-back now after four with none and two in seven coming in. This was his second multi-goal game of the season. Dennis Wideman (1A, even, 30:52 ice time, 4:55 PP, 4:02 PK, 3 SOG) has been lighting it up and he came into this affair with 18 points in 19 games. Unreal production for a blueliner.
In a Sportsnet.ca exclusive, we can now confirm that David Krejci (1G, 1A, +1, 2 PIM, 20:08 ice time, 3:12 PP, 1:29 PK, 2 SOG, 6-8 FO) is not human. It’s the only explanation.
Chuck Kobasew (1A, even, 16:32 ice time, 3:59 PP, no PK, 2 SOG, 0-1 FO) had three points in five December starts prior to this affair. Blake Wheeler (1A, +1, 17:31 ice time, 1:38 PP, 1:30 PK, 4 SOG) picked up his 28th point of the season and he has five in six games this month. Michael Ryder (1A, +1, 2 PIM, 17:45 ice time, 3:28 PP, no PK, 3 SOG) had back-to-back two-point games coming in here and now has six points in his six January starts.
RANGERS 2 @ ISLANDERS 1
Coming in: New York R (25-15-4) was 2-2-1 in January headed in here, while New York I (12-26-4) lost all four games on its most recent road trip and had just two wins dating back to the start of December.
Goaltending match-up: Henrik Lundqvist (33/34, .971 SV%) vs. Joey MacDonald (3/3) & Yann Danis (24/26, .923 SV%)
Net notes: Lundqvist had two shutouts in three starts coming in, but with a five-spot as his other game in that span. MacDonald’s stats behind this team have sort of been like that soda can you accidentally drop and then try to open. He left this game with an injury too.

Simon Gagne (1A, -1, 17:54 ice time, 0:51 PP, 2:51 PK, 1 SOG) had 37 points in 44 GP vs. PIT coming in and he had 41 points in 39 starts overall in ’08-9 too. Kimmo Timonen (1A, -2, 22:24 ice time, 1:06 PP, 4:53 PK, no SOG) has picked up helpers in four straight now and had 13 points in 13 GP coming in. OILERS 5 @ CAPITALS 2
Coming in: Edmonton (20-18-3) was 3-2-0 on its five-game homestand and had three on the road starting here. Washington (27-13-3) had won 14 of 16 before losing its last two.
Goaltending match-up: Dwayne Roloson (34/36, .944 SV%) vs. Jose Theodore (18/22, .818 SV%)
Net notes: Roloson was 3-2-0 in January with 10 goals against coming in. Theodore just had a personal six-game winning streak halted in his last start.

Ethan Moreau Andrew Cogliano Marc Pouliot

Washington line combos
Alexander Ovechkin Nicklas Backstrom Alexander Semin

Matt Bradley Michael Nylander Tomas Fleischmann
Key notes: Erik Cole’s (3G, +2, 18:25 ice time, 4:47 PP, 1:44 PK, 5 SOG, 1-0 FO) hands continue to be hot. He now has goals in six of 12, which is like a raging inferno compared to his production earlier in the season. This was his first multi-goal game and as of this writing he’s being credited with a hat trick, although some summaries are showing 2G, 1A. Whatever. Three points are three points.
Gilbert Brule (1G, 1A, +2, 2 PIM, 13:34 ice time, 3:16 PP, 0:03 PK, 1 SOG) has markers back-to-back now. Ryan Potulny (1A, +1, 9:05 ice time, no PP, no PK, 1 SOG) had a pair of assists in his first game of ’08-9 and added another one here. Tom Gilbert (1A, +1, 19:36 ice time, 3:23 PP, 1:56 PK, 2 SOG) had three points in six games coming in.
Sheldon Souray (1A, +1, 22:46 ice time, 4:44 PP, 3:20 PK, 3 SOG) continues to post extremely helpful point totals for owners in any format, although his PIM/ SOG contributions are especially helpful in standard leagues. Lubomir Visnovsky (1A, +1, 21:06 ice time, 5:02 PP, no PK, 2 SOG) had what was considered an off-season in ‘-07-8 with just 41 points, but he seems on track to beat that this time around.
Mike Green (1G, 1A, -1, 30:06 ice time, 6:05 PP, 3:34 PK, 7 SOG) has back-to-back two point games and he added his 39th and 40th points of the season. The guy is a beast, plain and simply. Any doubts about his ability to put up these sorts of numbers on an annual basis after last year’s breakthrough have to be erased by now.
Alexander Semin (1A, even, 4 PIM, 19:18 ice time, 4:20 PP, 2:25 PK, 2 SOG, 1-0 FO) has five points in five games since returning to the line-up. Tomas Fleischmann (1G, -1, 4 PIM, 15:39 ice time, 3:08 PP, no PK, 2 SOG, 0-2 FO) scored a beauty and has tickled the twine in four of six. Michael Nylander (1A, -1, 14:38 ice time, 2:37 PP, no PK, 2 SOG, 5-4 FO) has four points in his last five starts now.

Hensick (1A, even, 12:36 ice time, 1:30 PP, 0:01 PK, 2 SOG, 4-4 FO) had gone five games without a point coming in, while Tyler Arnason (1A, +1, 12:53 ice time, 1:02 PP, no PK, 1-5 FO) has points in two straight after seven without one.

Jakub Voracek (1G, +1, 15:34 ice time, 3:21 PP, 0:01 PK, 4 SOG) added his sixth NHL goal here and he has six points in six games.

Key notes: Joe Corvo (1G, -2, 26:26 ice time, 4:39 PP, 5:09 PK, 3 SOG) had one point in five tries before tonight’s lone goal for Carolina but was fairly productive in December with eight points in the final 10 GP of that month. Joni Pitkanen (1A, -1, 2 PIM, 24:15 ice time, 4:43 PP, 1:29 PK, 2 SOG) had two points in seven affairs prior to this helper, while Justin Williams (1A, -2, 15:54 ice time, 3:12 PP, no PK, 2 SOG, 0-1 FO) had that same total in the same span until his assist here.
This was the third time in ’08-9 that Jason Spezza (1A, +2, 19:00 ice time, 5:01 PP, 0:10 PK, 8 SOG, 9-9 FO) has recorded eight shots on net. He now has 12 points in his past 11 GP. Dany Heatley (1G, 1A, +2, 16:03 ice time, 3:06 PP, no PK, 4 SOG) had gone eight games without a goal and had just two in 15 before he found the net here. Daniel Alfredsson (1A, +2, 19:56 ice time, 4:51 PP, 1:37 PK, 6 SOG) stopped a brief two-game pointless skid and added his 37th point of the season tonight.
Antoine Vermette (1G, 1A, +2, 2 PIM, 18:22 ice time, 2:59 PP, 2:45 PK, 2 SOG, 14-6 FO) has collected three different two-pointers in five starts now. Mike Fisher (1G, +1, 17:19 ice time, 4:51 PP, 1:39 PK, 3 SOG, 6-3 FO) had gone seven starts without a point and his last goal had come November 27th. Chris Neil (1A, +1, 11:00 ice time, 1:48 PP, no PK, no SOG) has points in two of three and he has 106 PIM on the season. If you’re going to have a tough guy on your team, it may as well be one who skates a fairly regular shift and that has a chance at getting points.
COYOTES 3 @ WILD 6
Coming in: Phoenix (21-17-5) beat the Stars in a double-shootout Saturday night and had won four of six. Minnesota (20-18-3) splits its four-game roadie and had points in four of six.

Key notes: Olli Jokinen (1G, -1, 2 PIM, 14:57 ice time, 0:08 PP, no PK, 4 SOG, 5-8 FO) has goals in three of six and he ended a seven-game PIM-less streak. Daniel Carcillo (even, 2 PIM, 11:38 ice time, no PP, 0:25 PK, 1 SOG) got a minor near the end of the game to stop a period of four games without a visit to the sin bin. He tried to get into a fight after getting hit knee-on-knee, but was stopped by an on-ice official. Come on people… fantasy owners needed the PIM!
Shane Doan (2A, -1, 19:13 ice time, 0:14 PP, 1:30 PK, 1 SOG, 4-6 FO) has five different two-point results since just before Christmas. Steve Reinprecht (1G, 1A, even, 14:22 ice time, 0:14 PP, 1:41 PK, 1 SOG, 6-9 FO) has five points in his past seven now.

Marc-Andre Bergeron (1G, even, 18:02 ice time, 3:10 PP, no PK, 2 SOG) was back in the line-up after missing three weeks or so with a lower-body injury. Brent Burns (1A, even, 21:14 ice time, 2:35 PP, 0:11 PK, no SOG) had three games without a point but has seven in seven overall.

Crombeen (even, 19 PIM, 7:56 ice time, no PP, 0:24 PK, 2 SOG) and Jim Vandermeer (-1, 12 PIM, 5:34 ice time, no PP, no PK, no SOG) had the big PIM games for their deeper league owners..
Dion Phaneuf (1A, +1, 2 PIM, 25:58 ice time, 4:51 PP, 2:49 PK, 2 SOG) has helpers in four of five now after eight with nadda, but he was still looking for his first goal since November 11th. Goaltending match-up: Scott Clemmensen (26/29, .897 SV%) vs. Jason LaBarbera (4/6, .667 SV%) & Curtis Sanford (19/21, .905 SV%)
Net notes: Clemmensen had allowed 13 goals in four starts before tonight and this was his first career game vs. VAN. LaBarbera’s number of starts could be dwindling drastically if Roberto Luongo is really good to go and plays his normal workload.

Key notes: This was the 15th multi-point game for Zach Parise (1G, 1A, +1, 17:05 ice time, 1:01 PP, no PK, 6 SOG, 1-0 FO), who is just laying it down night after night for his poolies. Brian Rolston (1G, +1, 14:02 ice time, 0:38 PP, no PK, 5 SOG, 0-1 FO) has been chipping in a steady stream of goals over the past month with a healthy number of power play points too. He’s more valuable in standard leagues with his SOG total.
Jamie Langenbrunner (2A, +2, 16:07 ice time, 1:01 PP, 1:20 PK, no SOG) has three different multi-point games this month and he’s been part of a highly successful line for his Jersey team that actually has some offensive punch to it. Ditto for Travis Zajac (1G, 1A, +2, 18:33 ice time, 0:40 PP, 2:31 PK, 3 SOG, 2-4 FO), who had five points in six games coming in. Patrik Elias (2A, +1, 2 PIM, 15:01 ice time, 1:01 PP, 1:51 PK, 1 SOG, 1-0 FO) is just six points shy of matching last year’s 55-point plateau and he’s been a tremendous later round pick in any format.
Brian Gionta (1G, +1, 14:02 ice time, 0:38 PP, no PK, 2 SOG, 2-0 FO) had gone five games without a goal, but has six points in seven games. John Madden (1A, +1, 15:36 ice time, no PP, 1:27 PK, 1 SOG, 8-13 FO) stopped a five-game pointless slide here.
Pavol Demitra (1G, +1, 15:57 ice time, 2:09 PP, no PK, 3 SOG, 1-1 FO) has goals in two of four with four points in six games now, but he needs to step up his offensive production. Mats Sundin (1A, -1, 15:57 ice time, 3:05 PP, no PK, 1 SOG, 5-7 FO) has points back-to-back but the team has lost three of four with him in the line-up to date. Patience.
Shane O’Brien (1A, even, 2 PIM, 16:17 ice time, 0:05 PP, no PK, no SOG) has helpers back-to-back with PIM in four straight and 126 PIM on the season. Steve Bernier (1G, -1, 16:27 ice time, 2:12 PP, no PK, 2 SOG) has three goals in four starts with six points in seven games and 14 in 21 overall. Alex Burrows (1G, -1, 14:23 ice time, 0:41 PP, 1:02 PK, 3 SOG) had that three-point night @EDM as his only contribution in January before tonight, while Ryan Kesler (2A, even, 15:28 ice time, 0:41 PP, 1:02 PK, 4 SOG, 9-5 FO) has two different two-point games in four tries.

San Jose line combos

Key notes: Steven Stamkos (1G, +1, 11:40 ice time, 1:35 PP, no PK, 2 SOG, 0-6 FO) has points back-to-back now, while Mark Recchi (1A, +1, 16:07 ice time, 2:33 PP, 2:07 PK, 2 SOG) had 11 points in 19 starts coming in. Evgeny Artyukhin (1A, +1, 4 PIM, 12:52 ice time, 0:42 PP, no PK, no SOG) has a three-game point streak going now.
Vaclav Prospal (-1, 12 PIM, 16:29 ice time, 2:28 PP, no PK, 5 SOG) felt bad about this one-sided game for his owners and racked up some big PIM near the end by mouthing off. This was the second game back for David Koci (+1, 12 PIM, 9:08 ice time, no PP, 0:38 PK, no SOG) and he added another large PIM donation here after having 15 in the last one too.
Joe Thornton (2G, 1A, +2, 15:44 ice time, 3:31 PP, no PK, 4 SOG, 12-5 FO) had gone seven games without a goal and had one in 15 before tonight’s multi-goal effort. Devin Setoguchi (1G, 1A, +2, 13:34 ice time, 2:52 PP, no PK, 4 SOG) rang up his second multi-point result of January and he’s slightly above a point-per-game now on the season too. Patrick Marleau’s (2A, +2, 17:09 ice time, 3:20 PP, 0:42 PK, 1 SOG, 1-1 FO) second point of the night tied him with last year’s 48-point bottom line.
Joe Pavelski (1G, 1A, +1, 2 PIM, 20:04 ice time, 3:29 PP, 0:51 PK, 6 SOG, 10-6 FO) came into tonight just 13 points shy of last year’s 40-point career high and he has sure settled nicely into that L2 pivot role for SJ. Milan Michalek (1G, 2A, +1, 20:50 ice time, 2:50 PP, 2:19 PK, 1 SOG) has points in five of seven after this beating. This was his first multi-point effort since November, where he had four of them. Jonathan Cheechoo had eight points in his past 10 starts before adding more here.
Rob Blake has points in four of five and he’s just a few points shy of passing last year’s total with the Kings. Marc-Edouard Vlasic has helpers in three of six, while Tomas Plihal has points in three of five.
