Twitter Reaction: Leafs get rave reviews on Rielly, Kadri deals

NHL insider Chris Johnston discusses the Maple Leafs locking up both Morgan Rielly and Nazem Kadri, but says they will be up against the cap this offseason and aren’t in good position to sign Steven Stamkos.

The Toronto Maple Leafs stole the headlines on the first day of the Stanley Cup Playoffs by announcing six-year extensions for forward Nazem Kadri and defenceman Morgan Rielly on Wednesday morning.

Rielly and Kadri were both scheduled to become restricted free agents this summer. The two will continue to play important roles as president Brendan Shanahan, GM Lou Lamoriello and head coach Mike Babcock try to rebuild the Maple Leafs’ roster.

The Maple Leafs have taken plenty of criticism in the past for their valuation of players during the salary cap era, but the response was almost entirely positive when the terms of the two contracts were released.
