Twitter reaction: McDavid, Karlsson fans upset at NHL Awards snubs

Calgary Flames captain Mark Giordano joins Gene Principe to talk about being named the Foundation Player of the Year and his decision to give back to the community.

Award shows of any kind are usually a goldmine for social media entertainment and that was the case at Wednesday’s NHL Awards.

While there were some predictable results – Braden Holtby winning the Vezina and Barry Trotz taking home the Jack Adams – a few awards had divisive results.

Here’s some of the best Twitter reaction from the night.

Ottawa Senators fans and Erik Karlsson supporters weren’t too pleased when Drew Doughty won his first Norris Trophy as the league’s top defenceman.

People, keep this in mind: if Doughty didn’t win we wouldn’t have gotten this gem…

The Calder Trophy for the league’s best rookie was likely to be the most controversial result. Artemi Panarin edged out Shayne Gostisbehere and Connor McDavid, who finished second and third, respectively, in voting.

Jaromir Jagr was given the Masterton Trophy. The award goes to the player who “best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey,” but in Jagr’s case he seemed to have won it simply for being old and awesome.

Some people felt either Mats Zuccarello or Pascal Dupuis were more deserving as they both dealt with series health issues.
