The Pittsburgh Penguins extended goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury with a four-year, $23 million contract on Wednesday.
It’s a bit of a polarizing move by general manager Jim Rutherford and co.
Fleury’s resume, at least on the surface, reads rather well. He has a Stanley Cup and an Olympic gold medal to his credit, but the Penguins’ playoff struggles in recent years tell a different story.
Where else can you get a full dose of knee-jerk reaction and a bevy of jokes to boot? We look to Twitter for some instant analysis on the deal.
So instead of making Fleury earn an extension and keeping their options open, the Pens make him live up to one and are stuck if he fails.

This will make Fleury the 10th highest paid goalie in the NHL. He's only 29. Has won 295 games and a Cup. Not exactly unreasonable.

Most playoff wins, active goalies:
1. Fleury 52/93=56%
2. Quick 45/76=59%
3. Lundqvist 43/92=47%
4. Nabokov 42/86=49%
5. Niemi 35/62gm=56%

Out of the 33 goalies with 6000 or more 5v5 min the last 5 years, Fleury is 26th in 5v5 sv%. Not average. http://t.co/42SbkThVxO

Your goalie is Steve Mason RT @BroadStBull: RT @davegisaac: Flyers fans rejoice. Fleury has signed a four-year extension with the Penguins.

Guys, guys, it could be worse. We could've just signed Marc-Andre Fleury to a 4-year, $23M contract.

Marc-Andre Fleury re-signed to four year deal.

I think the Fleury deal is a great one if he plays really well from here on out, and a bad one if he plays poorly. You can all go home now.

Marc-Andre Fleury right now: http://t.co/uXrhZsqQxx
