Ownership is the biggest competitive advantage in professional sports.
On Friday morning, the Ottawa Senators continued to be a case study in that theory, firing head coach Guy Boucher less than 24 hours after general manager Pierre Dorion told the Ottawa Sun that head coaching decisions would be made in the off-season.
Hockey fans wasted no time in taking to Twitter to share their thoughts. Here are some of the finest initial reactions:
I really don't understand firing Boucher with less than 20 games left and at the end of his contract. Unless it was a mercy firing to put him out of his misery
But not all fans placed blame solely on management’s shoulders. Others took the opportunity to air one last set of grievances against Boucher’s coaching tactics.
He does look defeated… Maybe Dorian was right in axing him now. since the 3 were traded, the young guys got very little ice time after the call up, and have been mismanaged for a while under Boucher. Why bring the kids up and not play them https://t.co/o0ygneMmI9
It’s about damn time! Should have happened months ago. Boucher had no business leading this rebuild with the way he handled ice time and the decision he made on who to play/scratch. We’ll always have the amazing memories of 2017, but good riddance!
As much as everyone likes to blame Melnyk for the Sens demise, I place a lot of the blame on Guy Boucher. His system gets old and predictable it happened with the Lightning and it happened with the Sens. Melnyk and Dorion did the right move by firing Boucher.
I feel for Guy Boucher. One shot away from the Stanley Cup finals in ‘16 and now he’s canned mainly due to Melnyk. Won’t be long til he finds work. Badass guy, looks like a Bond villain. pic.twitter.com/bFzJ4Ms8lY
