Wendel Clark: Should have cross-checked Gretzky

Hugh Burrill caught up with Dougie Gilmour at the Joe Carter celebrity golf tournament to get his thoughts on the great event, the Stanley Cup Final, and why he's in awe of Dan Marino.

Toronto Maple Leafs fans love to point to a missed high sticking call on Wayne Gretzky that ultimately cost the team a chance to beat the Los Angeles Kings in the 1993 Western Conference Final.

However, former Maple Leafs forward Wendel Clark says it was another call by ref Kerry Fraser that truly hurt Toronto’s chances during an overtime loss in Game 6 of the best-of-seven series.

“Everyone forgets the penalty the ref called on (Maple Leafs forward) Glenn Anderson with three or five seconds left in the game,” Clark said from the Joe Carter Classic Golf Tournament on Sportsnet 590 The Fan. “So we started overtime shorthanded and that’s why we lost. It wasn’t the high stick.”

Gretzky scored the overtime-winning goal to lift Los Angeles past Toronto in Game 6 and added a hat trick in Game 7 to help the Kings advance to the Stanley Cup Final.

Appearing on Dean Blundell & Co, Clark looked back at the series and his memorable scrap with Kings defenceman Marty McSorley.

“They ended up beating us but they lost to Montreal so neither one of us won.” Clark said. “The more I talked about it, I should’ve went over and cross-checked (Wayne Gretzky). What was I doing fighting their big guy? That would’ve been a lot simpler.”
