Wild’s Mikko Koivu taken to hospital after crashing into boards

Minnesota's Mikko Koivu is reportedly heading to the hospital after crashing into the boards while playing Columbus on Tuesday.

Minnesota Wild forward Mikko Koivu left Tuesday’s game versus the Columbus Blue Jackets after crashing awkwardly into the end boards.

Koivu lost his footing while tied up with Blue Jackets defenceman David Savard early in the first period and was sent into the wall back-first. He skated to the bench own his on before exiting the game.

The 32-year-old centre was taken to a local hospital in Columbus, Michael Russo of the Star Tribune confirmed. The Wild offered an update via the team’s official Twitter account, declaring Koivu’s hospital visit a precautionary measure.

Koivu leads the Wild in scoring with 10 goals and 22 assists in 39 games this season.
