Winnipeg Jets to host Edmonton Oilers in Heritage Classic

Bill Daly of the NHL spoke at the press conference announcing the 2016 Heritage Classic between the Edmonton Oilers and Winnipeg Jets, citing their WHA origins and history as the driving force to their event.

WINNIPEG — The Winnipeg Jets and Edmonton Oilers will play a regular-season game outdoors at Investors Group Field next October.

The 2016 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic will be played Oct. 23. An alumni game featuring legendary players from each franchise will be held Oct. 22.

The Heritage Classic returns to the regular-season schedule after games in 2014 in Vancouver, 2011 in Calgary and 2003 in Edmonton.

Winnipeg will play an outdoor game for the first time.

The contest will be Edmonton’s second outdoors but first since hosting the first-ever NHL regular-season outdoor contest at Commonwealth Stadium in 2003.
