Zion Williamson wishes Hurricanes luck in ‘Bunch of Jerks’ shirt

Petr Mrazek needed to only make 18 saves for a shutout as the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Washington Capitals 5-0 in Game 3.

The Carolina Hurricanes have done plenty of work to grow their fan base this season, embracing a more entertaining culture under majority owner Tom Dundon, and qualifying for the playoffs for the first time in a decade didn’t hurt either.

Now they’ve got one of the biggest rising stars in all of sports on their side, as Zion Williamson is looking forward to Thursday’s Game 4 between the Hurricanes and Washington Capitals.

The projected first-overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft sent the following message to Hurricanes supporters while wearing a “Bunch of Jerks” shirt.

Williamson is from Salsbury, N.C., which is roughly two hours west of Raleigh where the Hurricanes play.

“What’s up ‘Canes fans? Zion Williamson here. Huge win in Game 3, now let’s bring the energy again for Game 4,” the Duke basketball star said with a huge smile. “Let’s do it!”

The “Bunch of Jerks” shirts spawned from comments made by Don Cherry during a February taping of Coach’s Corner on Hockey Night in Canada. That’s what Cherry called the Hurricanes when criticizing their post-game Storm Surge celebrations that became more and more elaborate and popular throughout the second half of the season.

Apparently it wasn’t the first time Cherry’s comments have inspired others to print phrases on various fabrics.

“I like Pavel Bure. He’s one of my favourite Russians. He slew footed Cam Neely and I called him a little weasel and they put towels out with ‘Weasel Power’ out in Vancouver,” Cherry recalled in an interview with The Canadian Press.

The Hurricanes are down 2-1 in the series.
