The inaugural CHL vs. USA Prospects Challenge event is in the books.
Cole Reschny scored the game-winning goal 18:48 into the third period and Caleb Desnoyers had a goal and an assist as the CHL prospects defeated the United States National Team Development Program 3-2 Wednesday at the Tribute Communities Centre in Oshawa to win the series 2-0.
Reschny (Victoria Royals) fired a wrist shot from the left faceoff dot into the top corner to seal the victory. Desnoyers (Moncton Wildcats) redirected Porter Martone's (Brampton Steelheads) shot from the point 16 seconds into the game to give the CHL an early lead.
Michael Misa (Saginaw Spirit) also scored for the CHL, and Malcolm Spence (Erie Otters) had two assists. Jack Ivankovic (Brampton Steelheads) made 10 saves.
Cole McKinney and Jack Murtagh scored for the USNTDP, and Harrison Boettiger made 35 stops in the loss.
Murtagh scored a tap-in on the power play to tie the game at two midway through the third period.
The Canada-USA rivalry was in full effect Wednesday. Around the 10-minute mark of the second period, a line brawl broke out after the whistle, setting the tone for the remainder of the game. Twenty-one penalties were called throughout the game — 19 after the line brawl, eight of which were roughing minors, and two unsportsmanlike conduct minors.
The new format replaced the former CHL Top Prospects game, which included CHL players only.
