One of Canada's top players is set to extend his stay in La Liga.
Spanish club Villareal is reportedly nearing a permanent deal for Canadian winger Tajon Buchanan for €9 million ($14.4 million CAD), per soccer insider Fabrizio Romano.
Buchanan joined Villareal in February in a loan deal from Serie A side Inter Milan for a loan fee of €1 million ($1.6 million CAD) with an option to buy. According to Romano, the permanent deal comes with a 20 per cent sell-on clause, meaning that Inter will receive 20 per cent of future earnings from a sale down the road.
The 26-year-old Brampton, Ont. native played 13 games (starting four) with Villareal in the back half of last season, netting one goal and adding two assists in 412 minutes of action.
Prior to his loan move, Buchanan made six Serie A appearances for Inter after recovering from a broken tibia in the early portion of the season.
Buchanan is a regular for the Canadian men's senior national team and tallied three goals over four games in Canada's Gold Cup run in June. In 51 international caps, he has eight goals and eight assists.
Before joining Inter Milan in 2024, Buchanan played for Club Brugge in the Belgian Pro League and the New England Revolution in MLS.
