Canada's Alena Sharp and Maddie Szeryk are off to good starts as they look to solidify LPGA Tour cards for next year.
Sharp, from Hamilton, shot a 4-under 68 and is tied for sixth after the opening round of the 90-hole final stage of LPGA Q-Series on Thursday in Mobile, Ala.
Szeryk, from London, had a 2-under 70 and is tied for 18th.
The top 25 and ties in the 99-player field earn cards for next season. The top 65 and ties make the cut after the fourth round.
Sharp and Szeryk both did not finish in the top 100 on the LPGA Tour this season while having partial status, sending them back to qualifying school.
China's Yu Liu leads after shooting a 9-under 62.
Four other Canadians are in the field.
Monet Chun of Richmond Hill, Ont., and Maude-Aimee Leblanc of Sherbrooke, Que., are tied for 40th at even par. Yeji Kwon of Port Coquitlam, B.C., is tied for 52nd at 1 over, while Josee Doyon of St-Georges, Que., is 96th at 6 over.
