Could the Los Angeles Angels’ latest first-round pick eventually suit up for Canada at the World Baseball Classic?
Tyler Bremner would like that to be the case to honour his late mother, he said in the lead-up to the draft.
Bremner was drafted second overall by Los Angeles on Sunday, becoming the first player with Canadian ties to come off the board in 2025.
A 21-year-old right-hander out of UC Santa Barbara, Bremner was born to Canadian parents in San Diego and emerged as one of the top Division I arms over the past two seasons. He was named to the All-Big West First Team and broke his school’s record for career strikeouts.
In 2025, Bremner posted a 3.49 ERA over 77.1 innings, striking out 111 hitters compared to just 19 walks.
During his sophomore 2024 campaign, the six-foot-two righty was even more stingy, delivering an 11-1 record for the Gauchos with a 2.54 ERA and 104 strikeouts.
Bremner operates with a three-pitch mix, a fastball, changeup and slider, but it’s his changeup that is his best-graded offering.
Baseball America ranked Bremner as the 11th-best prospect in this year’s class and gave his changeup a 70 grade on the 20-80 scale.
