The Houston Astros will be without a former gold-glove outfielder as they attempt a post-season run.
Daulton Varsho underwent left arthroscopic wrist surgery on Tuesday and will be sidelined for the remainder of the 2026 season, the Astros announced on Wednesday.
The 30-year-old was placed on the injured list with left wrist inflammation on Sept. 24 after dealing with cysts that limited his mobility in the joint for months.
Varsho was traded from the Toronto Blue Jays to the Astros in exchange for right-handed pitcher Spencer Arrighetti at the deadline.
After hitting 20 home runs in 71 games (a 46-home-run pace) during an injury-marred 2025 campaign, Varsho struggled at the plate this season. He slashed .221/.281/.355 with 12 long balls and 40 RBIs in 140 games split between the two teams.
Varsho's usually stellar defence declined, too. He accumulated more fielding run value (plus-49) and defensive runs saved (85) than any other outfielder from 2022-25, but had just plus-four FRV and zero DRS in 2026.
Selected in the second round of the 2017 MLB Draft, Varsho is set to hit free agency for the first time in his career this off-season.
