Houston Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez had to be helped off the field after a collision with teammate Jeremy Pena in the eighth inning of a game against the New York Mets.
Pena, who was playing shortstop, caught a fly ball but appeared to hit Alvarez — who was running in from the outfield — in the face with his elbow. Both players instantly fell to the ground and Alvarez needed to be helped off the field on a cart after several minutes on the field. Pena also was removed from the game but was able to do so under his own power.
Alvarez has been one of the hottest hitters in the majors over the past month and is an early candidate for the American League MVP. The 25-year-old has hit .316/.412/.658 with 23 homers and 56 RBIs this season, but has been especially hot in June with nine and home runs and 28 RBIs just this month.
