Alejandro Kirk's day came to an early end
The Toronto Blue Jays catcher was taken out of Sunday's road tilt against the Seattle Mariners after getting hit in the mask.
Speaking with reporters after the game, manager John Schneider said Kirk has a head contusion and was removed from the game as a precaution.
Tyler Heineman replaced Kirk for the remainder of the contest.
The 26-year-old finished with one hit and a run through his two at-bats before exiting Sunday. The one-time All-Star was batting .282 with two homers and 13 RBIs on 33 hits through his 117 plate appearances entering the day.
He signed a five-year, $58 million extension with Toronto entering the 2025 season.
Losing Kirk would be especially impactful at this point, considering the go-to catcher had been in form swinging the bat as of late. Heading into Sunday, he led the team with 16 hits through the last two weeks, doing so on a .381 batting average and .847 OPS.
The Blue Jays (19-20) look to complete a road-series sweep of the Mariners on Sunday to not only pick up a fourth-straight win, but also climb back to .500.
