The redemption season for Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Jose Berrios got off to a rocky start on Monday night.
Making his season debut against the Kansas City Royals, Berrios gave up nine hits and eight earned runs over five and two-thirds innings of work.
Not exactly ideal.
Especially when two out of the three Blue Jays' starters previous to Berrios also had less-than-ideal outings.
Berrios had a few solid innings, but really got smacked around in both the first and fourth innings en route to the eight earned runs.
Toronto's only starter to really impress through four games was Kevin Gausman, who pitched against the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday. Gausman gave up three runs - all of which were unearned - and eight hits while striking out seven, but was credited with the loss.
Berrios, 28, is looking to steady himself in 2023 after having an up-and-down 2022 season with Toronto. Last year, the right-hander finished with a 12-7 record and a 5.23 ERA over 32 starts.
The Blue Jays' offence also didn't help Berrios out as the team picked up just three hits and a single run with him on the mound.
Thankfully for both Berrios and Blue Jays fans, Monday was just game four of 162, and there is plenty of baseball left to play.
