The Toronto Blue Jays won't have one of their stars to start the second game of a key series against the New York Yankees.
Shortstop Bo Bichette is not in the starting lineup after being a late scratch Monday because of knee discomfort. Bichette stepped on a ball during warm-ups, causing the pain.
Bichette is "a lot better today," said Blue Jays manager John Schneider, who added that the shortstop might be available to come off the bench, if needed.
The Blue Jays were optimistic Bichette would not miss much time, saying no further tests were planned.
Infielder Leo Jimenez has been recalled from triple-A Buffalo and will be start at shortstop, batting ninth. To make room for Jimenez, outfielder Jonatan Clase has been optioned to Buffalo.
The decision to recall Jimenez was partly "positional, with Bo (Bichette) being banged up. ... He definitely could stick around," Schneider added.
The 24-year-old slashed .229/.329/.358 with four home runs and 19 RBIs in 63 games with the Blue Jays last season.
Jimenez has spent all of 2025 in the minors. though he's seen limited play because of injuries. He is slashing .271/.417/.333 in 15 games for the Bisons.
