Toronto Blue Jays infielder Ernie Clement will not be in the starting lineup for Wednesday's rubber match against the Minnesota Twins as he takes some much-needed rest.
Manager John Schneider told reporters on Wednesday that Clement received 10 stitches after colliding with Twins outfielder Matt Wallner at third base. Additionally, he underwent a CT scan on Tuesday that revealed a hairline fracture in his left middle finger.
He will still be available off the bench, but is considered day-to-day with no stint on the injured list planned.
The 29-year-old has been a key contributor at times for the first-place Blue Jays, slashing .274/.310/.706 with nine home runs and 40 RBIs in 460 plate appearances.
Clement has enjoyed a career resurgence since joining the Blue Jays on a minor-league agreement in 2023, hitting a career-best 12 home runs and 51 RBIs for the Blue Jays last season.
Prior to joining the Blue Jays, Clement played for the Cleveland Guardians and Athletics organizations. He was selected in the fourth round of the 2017 MLB Draft by the Guardians.
