Toronto Blue Jays star George Springer has been absent most of the season due to injuries but manager Charlie Montoyo had some good news to share about the outfielder’s recovery Thursday.
“I’m happy to say today is the best he’s felt the whole time,” Montoyo said, adding that Springer caught fly balls and did some throwing exercises Thursday.
The Blue Jays signed Springer to a club-record six-year, $150-million contract in free agency but nearly two months into the season he has been limited to only four games and none since May 2.
His current injury is a quad issue, similar to the one he was hindered by in early April. Despite the positive-sounding update Thursday, Montoyo had nothing specific to say about Springer’s timeline to return to the lineup.
“You know how we go, we go day-to-day, tomorrow he might not feel as good,” Montoyo said. “But as of today, with what he did, that’s the best he’s felt which is good news.”
