Toronto Blue Jays outfielder George Springer was removed from Wednesday's game against the Boston Red Sox with a right forearm contusion. Precautionary X-rays for Springer came back as negative.
Springer took a pitch to the forearm/elbow area from reliever Phillips Valdez in the top of the sixth inning. He would initially remain in the game as a base runner but was replaced by Bradley Zimmer as a defensive substitute in the bottom of the inning.
Coming into the game, Springer has slashed .277/.327/.489 with two home runs and six RBIs in 12 games. He had one hit and one RBI in two plate appearances Wednesday.
The Red Sox also lost designated hitter J.D. Martinez, who was removed from the game due to left abductor tightness.
Martinez, who hit an RBI single in the first, appeared to sustain the hip injury while running to second base after leading off the third inning with a double.
Christian Arroyo came on as a pinch-runner and remained in the lineup at DH.
The four-time all-star Martinez has a .231/326/.410 slash line through 39 at-bats in 11 games to start the season, his 12th in the majors and fifth with Boston.
The Blue Jays and Red Sox wrap up their three-game series at Fenway Park on Thursday afternoon.
