After a short pause in his rehab assignment, Max Scherzer is scheduled to make another start for the Buffalo Bisons.
Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider told reporters Monday in Toronto that Scherzer will start for the club's triple-A affiliate on Wednesday and that the veteran righty will likely need multiple rehab appearances before returning to the big-leagues.
Scherzer had three cortisone injections in his thumb over the all-star break, which prevented him from making a scheduled start in the Florida Complex League.
The 41-year-old had previously pitched for Buffalo on July 8 and for high-A Vancouver on July 3 as he attempted to return to the Blue Jays from back spasms that forced him onto the injured list.
In his last start with the Bisons, he allowed five runs and six hits over four innings while striking out five.
Scherzer last pitched for Toronto on June 10 against the Philadelphia Phillies before hitting the injured list later that week.
Various ailments have limited Scherzer to just six starts and 22 innings with the Blue Jays this season, in which he owns a 10.23 ERA, 14 strikeouts and 11 walks.
He was also sidelined from April 24 to June 10 due to right forearm tendinitis and left ankle inflammation.
In addition to the Scherzer update, Schneider said Monday that both outfielder Jesús Sánchez and reliever Yimi García may be approaching rehab stints.
Sánchez, who is currently sidelined with a sprained ankle, ran the bases on Monday in Dunedin, Fla., and is scheduled to do so again on Wednesday. If he progresses well from there, Sánchez could be in rehab games by Thursday.
Meanwhile, García, who has been out all season while working back from elbow surgery last September, is scheduled to throw a live batting practice session on Tuesday. If all goes well for the 35-year-old, the next step will be a rehab assignment.
