A blowout loss is forcing the Toronto Blue Jays to alter their pitching plans for a critical series this weekend.
The Blue Jays used six pitchers in Tuesday's 10-1 loss to the Detroit Tigers, including Spencer Arrighetti, who was supposed to start on Friday against the Texas Rangers.
As a result, Dylan Cease and Jose Soriano will each move up a day, with Cease starting Friday and Soriano starting Saturday against the Rangers.
Blue Jays manager John Schneider said the decision to pitch Arrighetti against the Tigers was made before the game with the goal of easing the burden of others in the bullpen.
"You're asking a lot out of guys out of the bullpen," Schneider said.
Arrighetti allowed two runs on one hit and two walks in two innings of work against the Tigers.
The Blue Jays will start Max Scherzer in the series finale against the Tigers on Wednesday afternoon. Toronto and the Rangers are both in pursuit of the Cleveland Guardians for the final wild-card spot in the American League.
