Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider provided a number of injury updates on Monday as the team prepares to begin a series against the Chicago White Sox.
Sportsnet's Shi Davidi relayed that Daulton Varsho continued to run the bases on Monday and will do so again on Wednesday. The 29-year-old centre fielder is working his way back from a hamstring strain in late May. Varsho resumed running the bases last Thursday after he was shut down from the activity due to some tightness flaring up in June.
After a delayed start to his 2025 season, Varsho gave the Blue Jays a spark with his return, hitting eight home runs in 24 games and providing his Gold Glove-calibre defence in the outfield.
Anthony Santander, meanwhile, has yet to begin hitting. Schneider said the outfielder's return to hitting will come "hopefully soon." Toronto's top off-season acquisition was moved to the 60-day injured list on Friday and won't be eligible to be activated until the end of July.
The 30-year-old has been on the injured list since the end of May with a shoulder injury, which needed a PRP injection shortly after he went on the shelf.
Schneider also provided an update on rehabbing right-hander Alek Manoah, who will throw a two-inning live batting practice session on Tuesday. His next step could be rehab games if things go well. Manoah underwent UCL reconstruction last season after a five-game return to big-leagues, in which he posted a 3.70 ERA over 24.1 innings.
The two most recent Blue Jays to go on the IL, reliever Yimi García and second baseman Andrés Giménez, remain in Toronto to continue treatment on their respective ankle injuries.
Giménez was injured during Toronto's four-game sweep of the New York Yankees, jamming his ankle on a tag play at second base, and García's ankle injury came when he slipped getting into a recovery tub.
Right-hander Paxton Schultz is also in Toronto as he works to return from right finger inflammation and has started playing catch from 60 feet.
Finally, starter Bowden Francis recently threw his first side session and the Blue Jays' Player Development Complex and "is doing all right," Schneider said.
Francis went on the IL on June 17 with a right shoulder impingement after a trying stretch of starts.
