Toronto Blue Jays catcher Reese McGuire and infielder Breyvic Valera cleared waivers on Sunday and were assigned to the club’s alternate training site.
Both players were designated for assignment on Thursday after failing to make the Blue Jays’ opening day roster.
With fellow catcher Alejandro Kirk breaking camp with Toronto, McGuire was squeezed out of a major-league job to start the season. He hit .168 in Grapefruit League action this spring.
The 26-year-old has a career .243/.281/.444 slash line over parts of three MLB seasons.
Valera, 29, hit .162 with a home run in 22 spring training contests in 2021. He did not appear in an MLB game in the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign.
