Blue Jays activate Ryu and Jansen, Chapman to hit leadoff vs. Rays

Toronto Blue Jays pitching coach Pete Walker discusses Hyun Jin Ryu's most recent positive outing with the Buffalo Bisons and his subsequent return to the Blue Jays.

The Toronto Blue Jays have reinstated left-hander Hyun Jin Ryu and catcher Ryan Jansen from the 10-day injured list.

Jansen will catch for Ryu on Saturday night's game against the Tampa Bay Rays (6:10 p.m. ET on Sportsnet ONE). With George Springer out, Matt Chapman assumes the role of leadoff hitter for the first time in his career.

“It’s not going to change my approach,” he said to Sportsnet's Shi Davidi. “A little lineup shakeup now will help the guys a little bit.”

Springer remains day-to-day after leaving Friday's game with a left ankle sprain after attempting to catch a fly ball in the bottom of the second inning. The three-time All-Star leaped near the centre-field wall to catch a ball hit by Rays second baseman Brandon Lowe before landing awkwardly.

Manager Charlie Montoyo says that the team doesn't need to do any imaging on Springer's ankle and that an IL stint shouldn't be necessary.

Ryu had four innings pitched, two earned runs, no walks, and six strikeouts in his rehab start with triple-A Buffalo last week.

To make way for Jansen and Ryu, the Jays have optioned catcher Tyler Heineman and right-hander Trent Thronton to triple-A.

Thornton was credited with two losses in ten games played and recorded a 3.52 ERA for the Jays this season.

Heineman hit for .267 with two runs and one RBI in the big leagues this season.
