The Toronto Blue Jays will turn to a non-traditional pitching plan as they look to steer out of their current skid.
Reliever Braydon Fisher will start against the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday, with Spencer Miles also expected to be part of the game plan, Blue Jays manager John Schneider told reporters on Tuesday.
Fisher, 25, has started six games for the Blue Jays this season, never pitching more than 1.1 innings.
In those 6.2 innings, the right-hander has not allowed a run, giving up three hits, five walks, and striking out eight.
Miles has shifted between starting, pitching bulk innings after an opener and a conventional bullpen role.
The 25-year-old rookie was selected by the Blue Jays in last year's Rule 5 Draft and had pitched only 14.2 professional innings over three seasons in the minors due to multiple severe injuries prior to this season.
He's extended far beyond that in his first MLB season, throwing 64 frames with a 3.52 ERA, 61 strikeouts and 19 walks.
The Blue Jays dropped to a season-worst nine games below .500 at 46-55 after dropping a third-straight game on Tuesday, and are six games out from the final American League wild-card spot.
