Toronto Blue Jays reliever Erik Swanson exited his appearance against the Cleveland Guardians in the seventh inning with right mid-back discomfort, the team said.
Swanson bent over in apparent discomfort after delivering a pitch to the third batter he faced, Kole Calhoun, with one out in the seventh inning.
"Right mid-back discomfort," manager John Schneider told reporters after the game. "Just checking him out, kind of go from there. Hopefully it's good news."
The right-hander has been one of the most important members of Toronto's bullpen this season. He entered the game with a record of 3-2 and a 3.12 ERA to go along with four saves in a team-high 59 appearances.
Tim Mayza replaced Swanson and induced an inning-ending double play to preserve the Blue Jays' 5-3 lead.
Swanson was acquired from the Seattle Mariners as part of an off-season trade in exchange for outfielder Teoscar Hernandez.
Minutes before Swanson was hurt, Hernandez hit a grand slam for the Mariners against the Kansas City Royals.
