In his first on-field action since he started as the Toronto Blue Jays' designated hitter in Game 3 of the 2025 ALCS, it would appear Anthony Santander still needs to shake off some rust.
Santander went 0-for-4 Wednesday night with a strikeout as he began a rehab assignment with triple-A Buffalo in losing fashion as the Bisons fell to the Charlotte Knights 5-4 at Truist Field in North Carolina.
Though the plan is to have Santander play in the outfield, he was kept off the field Wednesday as Buffalo's designated hitter, batting fourth.
The 31-year-old underwent left shoulder surgery in February and has yet to play a game for the Blue Jays in 2026. He also missed most of the 2025 season with an injury to the same shoulder.
Before becoming a Blue Jay, Santander was a dependable slugger for eight seasons with the Baltimore Orioles. He had his best season at the plate in 2024 when he won a Silver Slugger Award and hit a career-high 44 home runs.
