Max Scherzer is expected to do a bullpen session for the Blue Jays in Toronto this weekend, Sportsnet's Ben Nicholson-Smith reported Thursday.
After striking out eight while throwing 75 pitches for the Buffalo Bisons in a triple-A game on Wednesday, Scherzer is setting up for a possible start against the Cleveland Guardians next week.
It was Scherzer's second rehab start with Buffalo. He has been out with a thumb injury since throwing 45 pitches in his season, and Blue Jays, debut on March 29.
The 40-year-old Scherzer, a three-time Cy Young Award winner, signed a one-year, $15.5-million deal with the Blue Jays before this season.
The Blue Jays also got updates on Myles Straw, Nathan Lukes and Jonatan Clase.
Centre fielder Straw's recovery from an ankle injury is progressing well, and he hopes to avoid the injured list. Lukes (concussion protocol) can return to the Blue Jays' roster as soon as Friday against the White Sox.
Clase is returning to the starting lineup against the Diamondbacks after being out day-to-day with a knee injury. He will be playing centre field and batting ninth in the lineup on Thursday against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
