With the Toronto Blue Jays' pitching staff in flux once again, another bullpen game is on tap Wednesday.
And it will be Spencer Miles who will act as the opener for that game against the Kansas City Royals, Toronto announced after Tuesday's loss.
Shane Bieber had been slated to start Wednesday's game, but he was placed on the 15-day IL after he felt some discomfort while throwing a bullpen session in New York Sunday. An MRI later revealed inflammation in the teres major, the muscle that connects the shoulder blade to the upper arm.
Now it will fall on Miles to get the Blue Jays off to a good start Wednesday as they look to keep pace in the American League wild-card race.
Miles, who was a Rule 5 draft selection by the Blue Jays, has pitched well in his rookie season. Over 80.1 innings of work with Toronto, the right-hander has pitched to a 3.02 ERA.
He's also been asked to take on a number of roles, including opener, bulk guy and, more recently, stepping into the high-leverage role left behind when Jeff Hoffman was traded to the Minnesota Twins.
After falling 5-3 to the Royals in the series opener, the Blue Jays will look to get back on track Wednesday as they fight for the final playoff spot in the AL.
