TORONTO — Despite increasing reporting and speculation linking them to Pete Alonso and Max Scherzer, the Toronto Blue Jays are not progressing toward a deal with either free agent, according to industry sources.
Alonso, a slugging first baseman, and Scherzer, the veteran ace, both make sense for the club, which earlier this week signed outfielder Anthony Santander to a $92.5-million, five-year deal with considerable deferrals.
While introducing Santander, GM Ross Atkins noted that the Blue Jays “have got a lot of work done this off-season with the additions” of Santander, Andres Gimenez, Jeff Hoffman and Nick Sandlin, and later added that they continue to seek more adds and would present further opportunities to ownership. The GM also said the Blue Jays will be "working around the clock" to improve their team, with both pitchers and position players under consideration.
Meanwhile, another potential Blue Jays target landed elsewhere Thursday as Jurickson Profar signed a three-year, $42 million deal with Atlanta.
