The Toronto Blue Jays will turn to reliever Trevor Richards to make a rare start on Tuesday against the Baltimore Orioles, the club announced.
Richards fills Alek Manoah's spot after the right-hander suffered an elbow injury his last time out.
Richards has made seven starts for Toronto in the past two years. He began his MLB career as a starter in 2018 with Miami before transitioning to mostly bullpen work in 2020.
Richards is 1-0 with a 3.18 ERA in 25 appearances out of the bullpen this season. The right-hander has struck out 26 and walked 13.
Bowden Francis (forearm) was activated off the injured list Tuesday and could help fill innings after Richards exits. To make room for Francis, the Blue Jays optioned newly acquired right-hander Ryan Burr to triple-A Buffalo.
Meanwhile, the Orioles start three-time All-Star Corbin Burnes on Tuesday.
