The Toronto Blue Jays expect to have one of their top arms available in the coming week as they try to make one final push for a playoff spot.
Trey Yesavage is expected to throw a bullpen session in Texas, and the team will then evaluate his status for a potential return either Sunday against the Rangers or Monday against the Baltimore Orioles, John Schneider told reporters Wednesday.
If Yesavage throws a side session on Friday, he could be an option for Sunday, but a Saturday session could push a potential return to Monday.
The right-hander didn't last a full inning as he made a start with triple-A Buffalo lasting just 0.2 innings Tuesday, giving up two hits and two runs, one of them earned, against the Rochester Red Wings.
"It's up to people that are higher up than me and make decisions," Yesavage told reporters. "But I think I'm ready to go and take some stress off the bullpen."
Yesavage hasn't pitched in the majors since Aug. 4, when he suffered a meniscus injury against the Houston Astros. Yesavage's knee appeared to buckle as he warmed up for the third inning and he was eventually removed from the game. He later underwent surgery to repair knee cartilage on Sept. 4.
Another pitcher who is hoping to get back this season is Shane Bieber, who unfortunately had a setback that will delay his next side session.
The veteran right-hander hasn't pitched since Aug. 21 due to a shoulder injury.
The Blue Jays sit two games back of the Cleveland Guardians for the third and final wild-card spot and a half-a-game behind the Rangers.
