As the Toronto Blue Jays continue to manage a handful of injuries to their pitching rotation, while inching closer to Opening Day, manager John Schneider provided some updates.
The Blue Jays' bench boss told reporters on Sunday that right-handed pitcher Trey Yesavage — starting the season on IL with a shoulder injury — is expected to pitch in a minor-league game on Wednesday as he continues to recover.
Yesavage, along with fellow pitchers Shane Bieber and Jose Berrios, who are also sidelined with injuries to begin the season, will remain at the team's player development complex in Florida to continue their throwing programs.
With the trio of expected starters battling injuries, the Blue Jays will begin the 2026 season with a five-man pitching rotation of Kevin Gausman, Dylan Cease, Eric Lauer, Cody Ponce and Max Scherzer in that order.
As for the rest of the roster, Schneider said the final cuts are still being decided and mentioned that asset management "is definitely a part of it ... how does each decision affect someone else, the depth of the organization and the 40-man roster," per Sportsnet's Shi Davidi.
Schneider went on to mention that Yesavage, Bieber and Berrios will likely join the Blue Jays in Toronto for Opening Day against the Athletics on Friday, despite not being able to play.
