On Thursday it was the New York Yankees' decision to walk him, now it's the weather getting in the way — one of these days Miguel Cabrera will get the chance to record his 3,000th hit.
The Detroit Tigers announced that Friday's game against the Colorado Rockies has been postponed due to inclement weather in Detroit. The good news for Cabrera is he'll have several cracks at 3,000 on Saturday, as the Tigers will now play a doubleheader against the Rockies.
Cabrera, 39, is an 11-time All-Star, four-time batting champion, two-time MVP and Triple Crown winner, aiming to become the 33rd player with 3,000 or more hits.
Pete Rose leads the all-time hits list, with 4,256. All but two of the inactive players with 3,000 hits are in the Baseball Hall of Fame. The last player to hit the mark was Albert Pujols, who did so on May 4, 2018, while with the Dodgers.
Cabrera is also a hit away from becoming the seventh player with 500 home runs and 3,000 hits. The exclusive club includes some of the game's all-time greats: Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Eddie Murray, Rafael Palmeiro, Pujols and Alex Rodriguez.
Among those all-time greats, Cabrera will join Aaron and Mays as the trio with a batting average of .300 or better.
"That's even more special company,'' Hall of Famer and former Tigers shortstop Alan Trammell said Friday in Detroit's dugout. "He's going to go down as one of the best hitters of all time.
"He realizes that it's getting toward the end, but he still has something left in the tank. When it's all said and done this year, I think he's going to have a heck of a year.''
