Michael Soroka closed out his Arizona Diamondbacks debut with a bang.
The Canadian right-hander threw an immaculate inning on Monday against the Detroit Tigers, striking out Javier Báez, Kerry Carpenter and Gleyber Torres on nine pitches.
It marks the first immaculate inning of the 2026 MLB season after there were four thrown in 2025.
Soroka was making his first start after landing a one-year, $7.5-million deal with Arizona in the off-season.
The Calgary native was immaculate in the fifth inning of the game against Detroit, closing the book on a scoreless, 10-strikeout showing. The 10 punchouts tied Soroka's career high, which he set in 2025 while pitching for the Washington Nationals.
The 10 strikeouts also set a new record for a pitcher making their Diamondbacks debut, passing Randy Johnson's nine punchouts in his first game with Arizona in 1999, per USA Today's Bob Nightengale.
Soroka pitched for Team Canada at this spring's World Baseball Classic, allowing three earned runs over two starts — including a semifinal loss to the United States.
The 28-year-old is now in his sixth big-league season with his fifth organization.
Soroka split 2025 between the Nationals and Chicago Cubs, recording a 4.52 ERA and 95 strikeouts over 89.2 innings of work.
