Canadian outfielder Tristan Peters has earned some hardware for a stellar August.
The Chicago White Sox breakout star was named the American League rookie of the month for August after batting .320 with six home runs in 27 games, the league announced Thursday.
He becomes the first Canadian to take home a monthly rookie award since Joey Votto did so in September of 2008.
Peters, 26, paced all AL rookies in round-trippers, slugging percentage (.640) and OPS (1.054), and finished second in on-base percentage (.414), third in average and tied for third in RBI (14). He also had 14 runs scored and six doubles.
His hottest stretch came from Aug. 22 to 26, when he homered in five straight games and batted .556 with a 2.119 OPS. He became the 14th rookie in MLB history to homer in five straight games but was the second White Sox rookie to do so this season, joining teammate Munetaka Murakami.
The Winkler, Man., native joined an exclusive club over his hot August, becoming the second player in MLB history over a five-game span to have 10-plus hits, a home run in all five games, multiple doubles and walks and a stolen base, joining Babe Ruth, who accomplished the feat in 1921.
Peters has enjoyed more than just a solid month in his rookie season, however. Over 134 games, he has .279/.345/.468 batting splits with 12 home runs, 52 RBI and eight stolen bases. He was also named an all-star, replacing injured Athletics first baseman Nick Kurtz.
Cincinnati Reds first baseman Sal Stewart won the monthly award in the National League after batting .304 with a .879 OPS, eight home runs and 21 RBI.
