Canadian Tyler O’Neill has won his first Gold Glove Award for his role patrolling left field for the St. Louis Cardinals.
MLB announced the Gold Glove awards for both the American and National Leagues Tuesday night. The Dodgers’ Mookie Betts, the Rockies’ Nolan Arenado and the Cubs’ Javier Baez were among the other winners in the National League.
O’Neill, 25, recorded 89 putouts in 48 games this season, his third with the Cardinals. He led all MLB left fielders with nine Defensive Runs Saved (sixth-most among all MLB players), four Outs Above Average and was fourth among all MLB outfielders in Defensive Wins Above Replacement (3.9) while committing zero errors.
His Cardinals teammate Kolton Wong also won the award for his defensive play at second base, while Curt Flood, Willie McGee, Jim Edmonds and Jason Heyward are the only other Cardinals outfielders to win in franchise history.
In the American League, Cleveland teammates Roberto Pérez and Cesar Hernandez took home awards, while the Mariners (Evan White and J.P. Crawford) and the Rangers (Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Joey Gallo) each had a pair of winners as well.
Toronto Blue Jays left fielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. earned his first Gold Glove nomination this season, but ultimately lost out to Alex Gordon, who won for the fourth consecutive year, taking his career total to eight.
