St. Louis Cardinals veteran pitcher Adam Wainwright has won the 2020 Roberto Clemente Award.
The annual award is given to a player “who best represents the game of baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field.”
According to a profile on MLB.com, Wainwright was nominated for the award for, among other things, his work with Big League Impact (BLI), an organization he founded in 2013 “to meet basic human needs, including providing food, clean water, medical care and shelter to restore dignity and hope to those in need around the globe.”
Clemente was a Hall of Fame outfielder who died in a plane crash at the age of 38 while delivering supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.
Cleveland pitcher Carlos Carrasco won the award last year. Each team nominates a player for the award and the winner is chosen by a panel of voters combined with a fan vote.
In a normal year, the nominees would be announced in September and the winner during the World Series. But due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the nominees and winner were announced Monday during a special on MLB Network.
