Chicago Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya appeared to sustain a significant injury during the top of the eighth inning against the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre Wednesday.
After hitting a slow chopper to shortstop Bo Bichette, Amaya lunged for first base with his left leg beating the throw, but buckled and fell as his ankle appeared to twist at an awkward angle upon contact with the bag.
The 26-year-old remained down on the field for an extended period of time in visible pain before both his teammates and opponents waved for a medical cart to come and assist in helping Amaya off the field.
Cubs trainers eventually lifted Amaya onto a waiting cart and he was driven off while holding a towel over his face.
After the game, Cubs manager Craig Counsell told reporters that Amaya was removed with an ankle sprain and x-rays came back negative. He is expected to be placed on the injured list.
After starting off the season forming one of MLB's most effective catching tandems with Carson Kelly, Amaya missed over two months from late May to early August after sustaining a left oblique injury while attempting to throw a base-stealer out at second. He was reinstated from the 60-day injured list only one day prior, on Tuesday.
Amaya has a .281 average and .814 OPS with four home runs and 25 RBIs in 28 games.
