CHICAGO — Shota Imanaga pitched seven innings of three-hit ball in his fourth consecutive sharp start and Chicago extended their winning streak to seven games with a win over Philadelphia.
Nico Hoerner hit a solo homer and Seiya Suzuki followed with two-run drive to the back of the left-field bleachers in the seventh inning. Chicago has outscored opponents 51-18 during its winning streak, the team’s longest since an eight-game run in July 2023.
Imanaga allowed his only run on Kyle Schwarber’s eighth homer, a solo shot in the sixth. Bryce Harper added a deep two-run drive off reliever Riley Martin in the eighth as the Phillies dropped a seventh consecutive game for the first time since June 2019.
The Phillies scored an unearned run off Jacob Webb in the ninth before Caleb Thielbar got the final two outs with two runners on for his second save. Philadelphia has been outscored 49-14 during its slide.
YANKEES 4, RED SOX 0
BOSTON — Giancarlo Stanton hit a solo homer in the second and added a two-run double as the New York Yankees extended their winning streak to four straight with a 4-0 win over the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night.
Stanton, who sat out a 7-0 win over Kansas City on Sunday after going 0-for-9 in his previous two games, drove in the first three runs for New York and gave starter Luis Gil all the offense he needed against the struggling Red Sox.
Gil (1-1) picked up his first win of the season holding Boston to just two hits as the Yankees outhit the Red Sox 10-4 and cruised to their major league-leading fifth shutout of the season. Cody Bellinger extended his hitting streak to nine straight with a single in the eighth and scored on Randal Grichuk’s double to center.
GUARDIANS 8, ASTROS 5
CLEVELAND — Chase DeLauter hit a bases-loaded triple down the left-field line in the eighth inning as Cleveland rallied for a victory over Houston.
The Guardians’ rally spoiled a milestone night for Houston’s Jose Altuve, who became the third player in franchise history to reach 2,000 career games. Altuve, the fifth active player in the majors to reach 2,000 games, went 0 for 5 and is hitless in 10 at-bats in the series.
The triple was part of a six-run eighth for the Guardians, who have won four of six on their homestand. Rocchio had an RBI base hit, extending his hitting streak to eight games and Kyle Manzardo had a two-run single.
Peyton Pallette (1-1) got the win for Cleveland and Houston’s Enyel de los Santos (0-1) took the loss.
Houston’s Yordan Alvarez drove in three runs, including a bases-loaded, two-run single during a three-run fifth inning.
NATIONALS 11, BRAVES 4
WASHINGTON — James Wood homered, Luis García Jr. had four hits and Washington snapped Atlanta's six-game winning streak.
The Nationals scored three runs before Atlanta starter Reynaldo López (1-1) retired a hitter, and the right-hander was done two batters into the second. Foster Griffin (3-0) allowed three runs and five hits in six innings.
Curtis Mead also homered for Washington, and Drake Baldwin and Eli White went deep for the Braves.
REDS 12, RAYS 6
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Elly De La Cruz hit two of Cincinnati’s five home runs, rookie Sal Stewart added three RBIs to reach 24 on the season and the Reds scored the first nine runs to cruise to a victory over Tampa Bay.
De La Cruz, who went 3 for 6 with five RBIs, hit a two-run homer to begin the scoring in the first inning and he added a solo shot in the ninth for his eighth of the season to make it 12-2. It was De La Cruz’s sixth career multihomer game, passing Pete Rose for the most in Reds history by a switch-hitter.
Stewart drove in two runs on a single to center field in the sixth for a 9-0 lead and he added a sacrifice fly in the seventh. He’s tied with Houston’s Yordan Alvarez for the major league lead with 24 RBIs.
Cincinnati (16-8) has won five straight for its best start after 24 games since the 2006 team began 17-7. The Reds are eight games over .500 for the first time since early August of 2023.
BREWERS 12, TIGERS 4
DETROIT — Brice Turang drove in four runs and David Hamilton had four hits as Milwaukee routed Detroit.
Despite missing their top three hitters, the Brewers put 19 runners on base and scored in double digits for the second time this season. They have won five of six.
All nine Milwaukee starters reached base at least once, and Detroit catcher/knuckleballer Jake Rogers limited the damage by pitching a scoreless ninth inning.
Detroit lost its second straight after winning eight of nine.
TWINS 5, METS 3
NEW YORK — Embattled Mets closer Devin Williams allowed a tiebreaking RBI single to Luke Keaschall in the ninth inning, and New York lost its 12th consecutive game, falling to Minnesota.
The Mets’ skid is their longest since they dropped 12 straight from Aug. 10-23, 2002. No team has made the playoffs after a season in which it lost 12 in a row.
Matt Wallner followed Keaschall by drawing a bases-loaded walk off Williams (0-1), who didn’t retire any of the five batters he faced before being booed off the mound. Williams has allowed seven runs while recording four outs in his last three appearances.
CARDINALS 5, MARLINS 3
MIAMI — Nathan Church hit a two-run homer and Alec Burleson had two RBIs to back a strong start by Dustin May and St. Louis beat Miami.
May (3-2) allowed a leadoff home run to Jakob Marsee — his first of the season — but then settled down. He left with one on and one out in the sixth, allowing a run and six hits. Justin Bruihl followed with 1 1/3 scoreless innings.
Ryne Stanek walked three to load the bases with two outs in the eighth and left after a two-run single by Heriberto Hernández cut St. Louis’ lead to 5-3. George Soriano struck out Connor Norby to end the rally.
Riley O’Brien pitched a scoreless ninth for his seventh save in eight opportunities. He hasn’t allowed an earned run in his first 13 1/3 innings.
ROYALS 6, ORIOLES 5
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Maikel Garcia raced home on a game-ending wild pitch as Kansas City rallied for a win over Baltimore, snapping an eight-game losing streak.
After Garcia and Bobby Witt Jr., drew walks to lead off the ninth, Vinnie Pasquantino struck out with runners advancing to second and third on Ryan Helsley’s (0-2) wild pitch.
With Salvador Perez at-bat, Helsley uncorked his second wild pitch, a slider in the dirt blocked by catcher Adley Rutschman, as Garcia sped past with the winning run.
Lucas Erceg (1-1) worked around a leadoff ninth-inning walk for Kansas City’s first relief win since April 7.
RANGERS 5, PIRATES 1
ARLINGTON, Texas — Kumar Rocker allowed a run in six innings and Evan Carter drove in the tying run before robbing Oneil Cruz of a three-run homer, leading Texas to a victory over Pittsburgh.
Cruz singled leading off the game against Rocker (1-1). He stole second and took an extra base on Danny Jansen’s throwing error. Ryan O’Hearn singled for a 1-0 lead two batters into the game.
Joc Pederson singled leading off the second against Carmen Mlodzinski (1-1) and Josh Jung doubled him to third. Carter singled to tie it and Josh Smith hit a sacrifice fly to put the Rangers up 2-1.
Carter then robbed Cruz of a three-run homer in the fifth to keep it 2-1.
PADRES 1, ROCKIES 0
DENVER — Randy Vásquez threw seven shutout innings to help San Diego edge Colorado.
The win was the Padres’ 14th in their last 16 games following a 2-5 start to the season. They improved to 15-3 since the start of last season against the Rockies, who they’ve defeated seven times in a row.
Coming off his worst start of the young season — a no-decision against Seattle on April 15 in which he gave up four runs in four innings — Vásquez (2-0) allowed only three hits, struck out five and walked none.
Jake Cronenworth scored the game’s lone run after Rockies starter Chase Dollander (2-2) walked Manny Machado with the bases loaded and two outs in the sixth inning. It was Dollander’s only walk. He struck out nine in six innings and threw a career-high 102 pitches.
BLUE JAYS 4, ANGELS 2
ANAHEIM, Calif. — Lenyn Sosa had a pinch-hit, two-run double during a three-run eighth inning, reliever Louis Varland bailed out struggling closer Jeff Hoffman by inducing a game-ending double-play grounder, and Toronto Blue held on for a win over Los Angeles.
Hoffman struck out Zach Neto to open the ninth, but Mike Trout singled and Jo Adell and Jorge Soler were hit by pitches to load the bases. Pinch-hitter Yoán Moncada’s RBI single made it 4-2.
Toronto manager John Schneider pulled Hoffman in favour of Varland, who needed only one pitch to get Nolan Schanuel to ground into a 4-6-3 double play, which was upheld after a lengthy review. Shortstop Andres Gimenez’s relay throw beat Schanuel, who slid head-first.
GIANTS 3, DODGERS 1
SAN FRANCISCO — Jung Hoo Lee and Rafael Devers each hit RBI singles in the first inning that held up to support starter Landen Roupp, and San Francisco beat Los Angeles.
Shohei Ohtani went hitless with a pair of strikeouts over his initial three at-bats before a seventh-inning single that extended his career-best on-base streak to 53 games, tied for second place on the Dodgers’ franchise list with Shawn Green. On the 3-1 pitch from Erik Miller before his single, Ohtani challenged, thinking it was a ball, but the called strike was upheld to make it full count.
Roupp (4-1) struck out seven, walked five and allowed one run on one hit over five innings against the big-spending Dodgers. He struck out the side swinging in order in the third, including Ohtani’s second K of the game — a sign to manager Dave Roberts how much he wanted to keep the on-base streak alive.
ATHLETICS 5, MARINERS 2
SEATTLE — Shea Langeliers hit his eighth homer, Jacob Lopez pitched effectively into the sixth inning and the Athletics beat Seattle.
Langeliers homered for the second straight night, hitting a 417-foot shot to centre in the seventh inning. Jeff McNeil also went deep for the Athletics, who have won seven straight road games.
Seattle’s Cal Raleigh hit his second homer in as many nights and fourth of the season as he tries to shake off an early slump. Raleigh, who hit 60 homers last year, went 2 for 3 to raise his batting average to .177 as the Mariners lost for the sixth time in eight games.
WHITE SOX 11, DIAMONDBACKS 5
PHOENIX — Rookie Munetaka Murakami homered for the fourth straight game, Sean Burke won for the first time in 17 appearances, and Chicago beat Arizona.
Chicago scored four runs in the first inning and hit three consecutive homers — by Murakami, Miguel Vargas and Colson Montgomery — in the second for a 7-0 lead.
Montgomery and rookie Sam Antonacci led the White Sox with three RBIs apiece.
Merrill Kelly (1-1) surrendered eight runs in 4 1/3 innings — a game after starter Ryne Nelson was rocked for eight runs and got just one out.
Ildemaro Vargas hit a three-run homer in the ninth to extend his hit streak to a career-best 19 games.
